Action Mesothelioma Day Friday 6th July 2018

This annual event was inaugurated in 2006 to raise awareness of mesothelioma and to promote an Action Mesothelioma Charter (see below). Each year, on the first Friday in July, events are organized by asbestos victims support groups in cities throughout the UK.

Darlington: Meeting and Commemorative Dove Release. 10.30 am – 2.00 pm. Blackwell Grange Hotel, Grange Road, Darlington DL3 8QH. Organised by the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund and PRASAG.

Manchester: 12.30 pm  Rally and dove release. Albert Square (outside Manchester Town Hall). 1.00 – 2.00 pm. Public Meeting. Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, Manchester M2 5NS (near Town Hall). Organised by Greater Manchester Asbestos Victims Support Group.

Derbyshire: 10.30 am Tree planting ceremony, Grassmoor Country Park (meet at Birkin Lane car park) followed by a buffet lunch at North Wingfield Community Resource Centre, Whiteleas Avenue, North Wingfield S42 5PW. Organised by Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team

Portsmouth: 12.00 noon Butterfly release, raffle and buffet. The Inn Lodge, Burrfields Road, Portsmouth PO3 5HH. Organised by HASAG Asbestos Disease Support.

Swansea: 1.30 pm. Speakers and refreshments, followed by dove release at 4 pm. National Waterfront Museum, Oystermouth Road, Maritime Quarter, Swansea SA1 3RD. (Please confirm attendance with organisers). Organised by Asbestos Awareness and Support Cymru.

Liverpool: 11.00 am – 3.00 pm. Public meeting and refreshments, Liverpool Town Hall. Dove release 12.00 noon. Organised by Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support Group and Cheshire Asbestos Victims Support Group.

Leicester: 2.oo pm. Service of reflection and hope, dove release followed by refreshments. Leicester Cathedral. Organised by Mesothelioma UK.

Sheffield: 11.00 - 1.00. Commemorative name reading followed by meeting with speakers, and  Sheffield Socialist Choir, refreshments and buffet lunch. Sheffield Cathedral, Church Street, Sheffield. Organised by South Yorkshire Asbestos Victims Support Group.


Action Mesothelioma Charter

We, the undersigned, believe that:

Mesothelioma patients and their families have a right to:

  • a speedy and accurate diagnosis, supported by a Multi Disciplinary Team discussion;
  • good quality information from a variety of sources available in different media and languages;
  • support of a suitably qualified nurse and other Multi Disciplinary Team members throughout their illness;
  • be considered for the best possible treatments available with the support and input of a Multi Disciplinary Team;
  • have up-to-date advice on benefits and help in applying for them, and receive prompt payment of benefits;
  • have legal advice and guidance from a firm of solicitors experienced in mesothelioma claims;
  • guidance on end of life decisions and care at home;
  • provision of a consistent nationwide service from coroners using a clear and open process with a maximum case length of three months.

    And call upon the Government to:
  • have mesothelioma made a national priority by the Cancer Tsar;
  • fund good quality research, alongside other national bodies, on mesothelioma with a view to improving diagnosis, treatment and outcomes for patients;
  • support the production of clinical Guidelines on the best practice of diagnosis and management of mesothelioma;
  • ensure the Health and Safety Executive vigorously enforce existing regulations on asbestos.

    And call upon all employers to:
  • prevent future exposure to asbestos by providing a safe working environment with all necessary equipment to protect employees;
  • work with unions and individuals to ensure enforcement of current regulations to safeguard all employees;
  • identify all asbestos in their properties and organise its safe removal where practical or necessary when work is being carried out.

Mesothelioma is a malignant lung disease which results mainly from exposure to asbestos. Someone dies every five hours from mesothelioma in the UK.
